Welcome to the Rant page. This is where I get to rant and rave about what sucks, and what's cool in the world. If you can't take anything that hasn't been sanitized by the PC crowd, I'd suggest avoiding this page.

I Need a Windows for Me (and it's not Windows Me)
February 16, 2001
I admit it. I like Windows. I use it every day. I especially like Windows 2000 Professional. It has to be one of the most robust operating systems I've ever used. Heck, under normal circumstances I never need to reboot. I have a Pentium 4 with 256 megs of RAM and along with the OS I feel I have a great development system. Yet, something feels wrong.
I understand that many people have problems with computers. Many people are still learning the ins and outs of various aspects of the OS, but, I wish Microsoft would stop assuming every single one of us are idiots. One only needs look at the screen shots for Windows XP to see that this trend is going to continue. I am not an idiot, and it's about time that Microsoft stop treating me like one.
What exactly am I talking about? I don't need an OS that tries so hard to hold my hand. I want an OS that assumes I know how every button works and doesn't always try to offer me help at every opportunity.
What really bugs me are applications that steal focus. What do I mean by that? I work from home so I use a VPN to connect to my office. When the VPN dies (due to Network trouble or whatever), a warning message pops up in front of my screen. I am very good typist, so this means that 3 or 4 characters are lost because this other application has taken focus away from what I'm doing. AIM, AOL's IM program, has the same problem. Netscape used to do this when it couldn't connect to a web site.
I hate this with a passion. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that should ever take focus away from the current application is an urgent system warning like a lack of memory. Yet time after time I find my typing interuppted by some program's inane need to let me know that something absolutely trivial has happaned. Gee, thanks, but no thanks.
Things like this should be tweakable at the system level, and I should be able to tweak stuff like this without using third party tools like X-Setup. The OS should simply allow me to say, "Yes, I'm an expert, trust me", and open itself up to me in such a way that I can do what I want.
