Begin the procedure by rebooting your system - when you see the Starting Windows 98 .. press the F8 key, you will be presented with a menu, choose the MSDOS prompt only.
Now Type EXACTLY CD\Windows\Command on the drive where Windows 98 is installed, usually C.
Now type SCANREG/FIX and hit enter. You will see quite a bit of activity on your HDD, be patient and allow Scanreg to fix your registry and make repairs.
When Scanreg is done, reboot back into Windows 98. If you cannot, when you see the Starting Windows 98 .. press the F8 key, you will be presented with a menu, choose Safe Mode.
Almost done - - System File Checker keeps track of critical files that make your computer run. If these are moved or changed, System File Checker restores them.
Click Start Run type SFC and click OK alternatively, you can also start System File Checker by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Accessories, pointing to System Tools, and then clicking System Information. In System Information, click Tools, and then click System File Checker.
Make sure your CD is in the drive. When the dialogue box appears, Click Settings Make sure the Check for changed files and Check for deleted files boxes are checked, click OK, and then click Start. Follow the prompts from System File Checker.
When System File Checker is done, reboot your system and test for any problems. This completes checking/verifying your registry and replacing corrupted and deleted OS files!
